Recently I saw the news that Zara may collaborate with John Galliano on seasonal collections.

For many people this sounds surprising. Galliano is one of the most iconic designers in luxury fashion, while Zara is a global mass-market brand.

But honestly, when I read the news, it didn’t feel strange at all. It actually felt like a very logical step for the fashion industry today.

What stood out to me is how the Inditex team operates. They treat very large projects almost as routine.

Activations in three major cities around the world?
-No problem.

Top photographers?
-Steven Meisel is basically on speed dial.

Models?
-Choose between Vittoria Ceretti or Alex Consani.

At some point I realized something interesting: today many of the biggest talents in fashion actually want to work with Zara.

In a way it reminds me of the beauty industry. For decades, appearing in a L’Oréal Paris campaign has been a major milestone for models.

Zara is starting to play a similar role in fashion.

Why Luxury Fashion Feels Different Today

At the same time, many people feel increasingly distant from traditional luxury fashion.

Luxury fashion used to speak to people with strong taste and cultural curiosity.

Today it often speaks more to status and visibility.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, designers like Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, Martin Margiela, and Ann Demeulemeester created fashion that required attention. Their work wasn’t always obvious, but it had depth.

You had to look closely. You had to understand references.

Today the industry works differently.

Large luxury groups focus heavily on scale, marketing, and global visibility. The goal is often not to be deeply understood. The goal is to be widely seen.

That’s part of the reason logos, hype, and extreme prices have become such central elements of the system.

Why Zara’s Strategy Is Interesting

Brands like Zara operate in a completely different way.

They move fast.
They collaborate widely.
They stay closely connected to culture, media, and talent.

And interestingly, they often have access to the same creative ecosystem as luxury brands: photographers, stylists, models, and art directors.

This creates a fascinating situation in fashion today.

Sometimes the most exciting collaborations don’t happen inside traditional luxury houses.

They happen somewhere unexpected.

My Honest Thought

If the Galliano collaboration with Zara really happens, I’ll be watching with curiosity.

And honestly if there is a line to participate in projects like this, I might be standing somewhere near the front of it.

Because fashion is changing.

And sometimes the most interesting things happen exactly where you don’t expect them.
